The congress kicked off with the official inauguration attended by Rome’s Lord Mayor Walter Veltroni, who underlined the importance of tourism for the Eternal City and for the country as a whole, and who welcomed the “crème de la crème” of the European hospitality industry to Rome. The Capitol Hill event was a unique opportunity for the 400 participants to admire the historic venue and descend the majestic staircase designed by Michelangelo.

“Participation in the Congress has surpassed our best expectations, rewarding the choice of contents of the educational day – affirms Sorbellini, Chairman of the meeting - though the Association maintains its “amicable” characteristic with which it was born, it becomes ever more professional and open to collaboration on a European level among members. International cooperation is of primary importance to EHMA".
The effects of globalisation on the hotel industry was one of the issues addressed at the two-day event. But the speakers also debated other burning issues like the need to “return to basics,” in order to fight uniformity, the need to allow emerging markets like China, Russia and India to come into the mainstream of international hospitality without having to forgo their own cultures, and the need to jump on the fast-growing leisure time and wellbeing bandwagon.

During a panel discussion Mike Ashton, Vice President Marketing Hilton International, asked if global brands really add value to customers and investors. “Consumers want a brand that reflects their cultural diversity and in which they can trust".
Christopher Hartley, Senior Vice President Sales & Marketing Kempinski Hotels, also stressed the need to respect local cultures. “The consumer is attracted by brands but upset by how they impose their ways on other cultures" he said.

Jacky Tresch, Director of Marketing, Accor Hotels, said that his group, which took over 30% of the German Dorint Hotels “is a major international brand but wants to keep the local identity of Dorint, a well-positioned small brand.”
“Globalisation or localisation” was the issue addressed by Luigi de Simone Niquesa, Lecturer in Tourism, Perugia University and C.E.O. of I.H.M. International Hospitality Management S.p.A. “Globalisation must be slowed down, we must go back to the roots and prefer quality over speed. We need global rules but local thinking, acting and producing. The global challenge plays on human resources and skills.”

Mike Olsen, Professor of Hospitality Strategy, Cornell University, stressed the need to “get back to adding value by investing in unique methods, products and services and using such tools as loyalty programmes, distribution systems and revenue management.”

Addressing the issue of security Hans Lindh, Director Lodging Industry EMEA, American Express, described it as “a corporate priority,” while Paul Tribolet, Senior Vice President and Director of Sales & Marketing, Starwood Hotels and Resorts, underlined the need to “step up controls without unnecessarily frightening the customers.”

Leisure time was another issue addressed by the panel. “A fast-growing phenomenon. If you’re not on the bandwagon it may already be too late,” warned Tribolet.

“We can be cautiously optimistic for 2003,” said Julia Felton, Executive Director HotelBenchmark, Deloitte & Touche. “In 2002 some 2% more people travelled and the revPAR fluctuated from a –5% to a +5%. We expect a slow recovery in 2003 but this will, of course, depend on an eventual war in the Middle East.”
The congress ended with a private visit to the Sistine Chapel and, during the memorable gala dinner in the Sheraton Hotel, Gianni K. van Daalen, General Manager of the prestigious Adlon Hotel in Berlin received the "2002 European Hotel Manager of the Year award" for his exceptional contribution to the hospitality industry.
