This exclusive award is dedicated to General Managers who succeed in enacting and promoting sustainable hospitality actions by means of environmental protection and preservation: out-of-the box approach and forward-looking plans perfectly match with bottom line accounting. Green ethics and corporate social responsibilities are also meant to improve operational and economic performances in the hospitality sector. Every year the EHMA Sustainability Award is organized in cooperation with Sealed Air, Diversey Care, a company specialized in the supply of sustainable and innovative cleaning and hygiene solutions. The fourth edition ceremony was held during theEHMA annual General Meeting in Geneva. It is the first time that an Italian general manager is rewarded: Mr. Palmiro Noschese, Italy Area Manager Meliá Hotels International.. receives the prize from Mrs./Dr. Ilham Kadri President Diversey Care and Vice President & Officer Sealed Air.
It was hard for the jury to vote for the finalist out of five projects. All their business innovative ideas deserved to win but, as a matter of fact, Palmiro Noschese definitely paved his way to success. He was personally involved in his project, the recruitment and hiring process of six disabled at the Melià Roma Aurelia Antica Hotel in Rome. The Italian Down’s Syndrome Association (AIPD) provided its support together with the Italian Magnolia media company. The latter also made a docu-fiction titled “Hotel 6 Stelle” (6 star-hotel) which has been broadcasted for some weeks by Rai, Italy's national public broadcasting company. It was the first Italian fiction on disability employment-related issues.

Palmiro Noschese Meliá Hotels International, Area Manager Italy: recruitment and hiring process of six disabled at Meliá Roma Aurelia Antica Hotel
The aim was engaging disabled persons in some on-the-job training activities by means of factual cooperation with the hotel staff. Six young boys, were assigned to different hotel operation departments (reception, maintenance, bar & restaurant, breakfast, kitchen and housekeeping). Daily tasks and tutors were assigned and selected according to participants’ inclination and behaviors so as to ease their own skills and cognitive competence development hence, self-esteem improved and independence in daily living activities was promoted. The successful experience of Melià Roma Antica has become a model for other hospitality companies which are willing to plan and enact similar projects.

Alessandro Cabella, Managing Director at Rome Cavalieri, Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts: food waste prevention, reduction and reuse
Alessandro Cabella focused on food waste prevention, reduction and reuse on occasion of business banqueting in the hotel premises. Onlus Equoevento embraced the program and over 12,000 surplus meals were donated to local charities such as Caritas e the Comunità di Sant'Egidio. Expo 2015 shares this vision with its theme «Feeding the planet, energy for life» and the operation had also a positive environmental effect as 6,600 kilograms of carbon dioxide emission per month were cut down. Such an amount is needed to prepare the same quantity of food they were able to collect.
Patrick Recasens, General Manager at Pullman Timi Ama Sardegna in Villasimius: «Yes, we care!» environmental protection project.
For many years Patrick Recasens has been promoting several initiatives for the environmental protection at the Sardinian resort and also in cooperation with Accor hotel group. «Yes, we care!» is the hotel claim;, it envisages 100% waste reuse and recycling from many resort operations, special employee training programs, ecosustainable products purchase, eco-friendly cosmetics for SPA treatments. In 2014, in a wonderful and wild setting, almost 400 non professional athletes competed in a track event organized by Pullman Timi Ama to enhance the importance of environmental responsibility. This true zero-emission experience ensured media coverage and promotion of the resort and of the whole area.
Ramon Vidal Castro, General Manager of Meliá Castilla Madrid: safeguarding children's rights.
Ramon Vidal Castro has developed a set of initiatives and partnerships to promote and safeguard the welfare of children. He has also partnered with UNICEF and the Italian Association Nuevo Futuro, the latter in fact takes care of the education of minors from social security child care centers. Furthermore on May 19 2014 the hotel sponsored the Children’s Day in Tetuán district, Madrid. Commitment was given to social exclusion and protection of disadvantaged groups issues, with several partnerships for donations of food and materials to foundations and international and Spanish NGOs, as well as contributions on occasion of the Universal Children’s Day and the World Environment Day. In addition, an energy efficiency project was implemented for the hotel property which received the environmental quality ISO 14001 certification. Similar commitment was taken for the local culture enhancement, for special purchase agreements and sustainable initiatives to support employment.
Elisabeth Perwanger, General Manager of Steigenberger Hotel Herrenhof Vienna: ecosustainable meetings and events.
At the beginning of 2015 Elisabeth Perwanger launched the «Green Meetings by Steigenberger» program with the aim of offering ecosustainable services to meetings and events, with total compensation for CO2 emission. A remarkable impact since MICE is an important business sector at Steigenberger Hotel Herrenhof Vienna. On average, every year it welcomes 75,000 delegates and participants to meetings conferences, conventions and incentives. Beside the «Green Meetings by Steigenberger» the hotel obtained the Austrian Ecolabel quality certification and the ISO 14001 Certification. Elisabeth Perwanger also enacted a set of operations and programs for energy and water saving, sewage treatment, heating and cooling, cleaning service management, food and training.
